One of the most anticipated summer holidays is right around the corner, and everyone is ready to celebrate – The Fourth of July! With delicious barbecues, fun activities, family and friends, and iconic fireworks lighting up the sky, it’s the ultimate summer day packed into 24 hours. However, for those providing Alzheimer’s home care, this loud and lively holiday can bring unique challenges.
While many celebrate in their own way, caregivers of loved ones with Alzheimer’s Disease may feel anxious as the day approaches. Balancing the desire to enjoy the holiday with ensuring their loved ones’ safety during the festivities is a common concern for those navigating Alzheimer’s home care.
Five Tips for Enjoying the Holiday Safely with Your Loved One
#1 Keep some routines in the day.
For your loved one with Alzheimer’s Disease, one of the best ways he can be present for the day is to have routines that keep him grounded during his day. Because of that, it can be helpful to keep as much of your loved one’s day as consistent as possible.
That can look like starting his day with the same routine of getting ready, eating breakfast, and participating in whatever activity he usually does after breakfast. It can also involve taking a moment out of the middle of the day to focus on a midday activity that he normally enjoys, or ensuring he’s back home in time to participate in his nightly bedtime routine.
#2 Keep your gathering on the smaller side.
Large, boisterous crowds can be disorienting and anxiety-producing for someone with Alzheimer’s Disease and can throw off their entire day. Having your loved one enjoy the day with a small family gathering in a familiar location like his backyard or a favorite smaller park can help him feel more comfortable with the day’s events.
#3 Be prepared to make adjustments.
No matter how much you try, something may go awry, and you’ll need to leave the event to keep your loved one safe, or you might have to stop participating in an activity. Be prepared to make adjustments calmly if needed and move on to the next thing.
#4 Avoid loud events.
While fireworks and parades are often a huge part of the celebrations, consider having your loved one skip them to avoid any undo stress.
#5 Celebrate on another day.
If the Fourth of July is just too overwhelming or falls on a day when you can’t celebrate, consider having a smaller Fourth of July celebration at home on a different day. You can put up special Fourth of July decorations, eat some traditional Fourth of July food, and celebrate safely.
If you want to have a little more fun, like grilling outside, consider having an Alzheimer’s home care provider join you for the day to help you care for your loved one while you attend to the grill. An Alzheimer’s home care provider can lead your loved one in setting the table while you keep the fire going strong, or help your loved one enjoy his meal while you slice up a nicely grilled steak.
With Alzheimer’s home care support, you and your loved one can enjoy a safe holiday this year.
